Pros: Great color, plastic molded hood, nice face.
Cons: Crappy cape, overpriced as a stand alone figure
I don't think that I am the only person that admires the Dementors of Azkaban. There are others out there but we are often silent about it. Why? They aren't exactly great conversationalists, their table manners leave much to be desired and frankly, there's not much to them. What they do represent is the darker side of the Harry Potter saga. When Lego introduced the very first Dementor figure it was met with a lot of negative words on Lego fan boards. What you say in the films and read about them in the books was clearly not translated all that well into a Lego mini figure but you have to keep in mind, designers are working with something smaller than a lighter so something has to be sacrificed somewhere.
The thing that irked collectors the most about the Dementor figure is that it was sloppy. Why go through the trouble of having a plastic hood and then throw in a cheesy cape? Granted, the capes that appear in the other Harry Potter figures are your basic cape but come on, this is a Dementor we are talking about, they deserved something a bit more ominous. Thankfully you can modify or customize your figures any way that you like however, be forewarned, if you do so and try to enter it into a Lego competition, you will be disqualified. There isn't much to the actual figure but it is done up in a nice swamp green color. There is a little bit of stenciling on the face peg but most of the time it is obscured by the molded plastic hood. The Dementor rests on a single column; it would have been nice if they used a clear piece instead of a swamp green one so that if you had a bunch of them in a scene you could give them the appearance that they were actually floating.
You can find the Dementor mini figure in the following Harry Potter Lego sets:
4757 - Hogwarts Castle
10132 - Motorized Hogwarts Express
4753 - Sirius Black's Escape
4758 - Hogwarts Express
There are several different sets for Hogwarts Express so it is important that you know the year it was released and the specific set number. The Motorized Hogwarts Express and the regular Hogwarts Express were released in 2004, Hogwarts Express was released in 2001 and does not have the Dementor figure in it. I doubt anyone is going to buy one of the Hogwarts trains just to get the Dementor figure but when you see the prices that some sites are selling this single figure for, you might just want to opt to spend the extra $20.00 and get a complete set. The prices have dramatically dropped on most of the older, larger Harry Potter sets but that trend won’t last forever.
I have seen the individual Dementor figures sell for as much as $25.00 each at toy conventions. Let's put it bluntly, that is a complete rip off. You can get one of the older sets for $50.00 to $60.00 and get two Dementor figures in it and a ton of Lego elements too. Why is this specific figure so expensive? The color used for it is one reason, authenticity is another. If you collect Lego you know that it can get expensive to complete a series, the Harry Potter theme is no different. Once you have them all you will want to create something larger and more visually dramatic and that means more pieces.
If you don't want to buy the figures you can make your own using stock pieces but they aren't going to be "authentic" but that is what Lego is all about, using your imagination. The lowest price I have seen on these is about six or seven dollars and I might be tempted to pay that if I wanted more than a couple of them in a scene. Even though the Lego designers really fumbled the deal with the cape / cloak I do love the creepy green color that they used as well as the minimal amount of stenciled detail on their faces. If you are a fan of the Dementor and want to get more Lego mini figures of them, seek out the older sets that have been reduced or look online for people who are looking to make a fair trade for them.
