Whirlpool GHW9200LW and extended warranty problems

Pros: Enjoyed the sanitary function, and the spin cycle was very quiet.
Cons: Durability is poor with only 8 years service. Warranty not worth purchasing.
Purchased Whirlpool Duet GHW9200LW from Lowes 07/2003 along with dryer and pedastals. Only two adults in household. Was very satisified with service on washer until recently it started making loud noise during spin cycles.
Had purchased extended service plans with Whirlpool and contacted them for service. A&E Factory Service came onsite within two days. The technician was very knowledgable and explainded that the bearings were out on the tub and parts / labor would be about $1500.00. He contacted Whirlpool to get authorization to do the repairs, after talking with them, he told me they elected to replace the unit. This was great news since I have paid for extended warranties several times over the years.
When Whirlpool contacted me 5 days later they said that they would send me a check for $246.13 as total settlement on my warranty. Obviously I was not happy to have paid $1297.00 for the unit plus another approximately $650 over the years for a warranty only to have a total settlement of $246.
Went online and discovered that this is a pretty common issue with these units. The repair technician said that washers were only expected to last about 6 years. Since I had over 8 years service I should be lucky. He said since I had such light duty without children it probably contributed to the longetivity.
Would not recommend purchasing Whirlpool products nor their extended warranty products.
